US Considering Halting Arms Shipment to Israel

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin says the Biden administration withheld a shipment of high payload munitions to Israel due to concerns over Israel’s offensive in Rafah, Gaza. This decision marked the first time such a shipment has been paused since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war. Austin emphasized the need for Israel to ensure civilian protection in any offensive.

Secretary Austin clarified that a final decision on the shipment has not been made, however. Republicans criticized the administration’s move, arguing that Israel should be provided with necessary weapons. The US opposes a major offensive in Rafah, fearing civilian casualties, and has held discussions with Israeli officials to present alternatives. Israeli officials are expressing frustration over the US decision, concerned about its impact on hostage talks and Hamas’s stance. Despite initial approval of Israel’s operation to control the Rafah border crossing, tensions persist over the handling of the conflict and the risk of civilian casualties.
