Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdul-rahman Al Thani is expressing concern about the misuse of the country’s mediation role in the hostage deal talks between Israel and Hamas, prompting a re-evaluation of Qatar’s involvement in ongoing negotiations.  While he did not name specific politicians, the comments followed US Democratic congressman Steny Hoyer’s call to reassess the US-Qatar relationship, urging Qatar to pressure Hamas for progress in releasing hostages. Sheikh Mohammed emphasized the limitations mediators are dealing with and hinted at efforts to address obstacles in the Gaza ceasefire talks and hostage release negotiations, while also condemning Israel’s actions in Gaza and the West Bank.

The United States works with Qatar and has about 10,000 US troops in the country. The complaint from many international voices is that Qatar is not doing enough. That Qatar houses Hamas terrorists in beautiful villas or hotels and supports their terrorism by giving them places to stay out of the public eye. So it’s hard to believe they could be a neutral force in these negotiations to get hostages back. That being said, the positive side is that qatar does in fact have lines of communication with Hamas and therefore they have the ability to speak with them and relay information.

US congressman Steny Hoyer was calling on the US to reevaluate its relationship with Qatar and says that if Qatar were working in good faith, they would pressure Hamas to work toward a hostage release. This angered the Qatari premiere.

Prime Minister al-Thani said his country is in a complete re-evaluation of its role while at a Doha news conference.

“There is exploitation and abuse of the Qatari role,” said al-Thani. He went on to say his nation is being slammed by “politicians who are trying to conduct election campaigns by slighting the State of Qatar.”

Qatar was one of the first Arab nations to engage in trade and business with Israel in 1996. After two decades, the ties stopped when Qatar was displeased with Israel during Operation Cast Lead, which lasted for three bloody weeks.
