Ten Israeli hostages, including 8 women and one teen with her mom, were released on November 28, 2023, after enduring 53 days in Hamas captivity in Gaza. The hostages, primarily from Kibbutz Nir Oz, were handed over by two terror organizations – Hamas and the Islamic Jihad – to the Red Cross in Gaza before being transferred to Israel via the Kerem Shalom crossing. The release was part of an extended deal with Hamas to pause fighting, initially planned for four days. However, a subsequent agreement led to the release of 10 Israeli citizens on both Tuesday and Wednesday, with two Thai nationals also released separately on Tuesday.
The handover was managed by armed, masked terrorists, and the hostages were brought to Israeli hospitals for treatment and monitoring before reuniting with their families. The truce was expected to last until Wednesday, with another group of hostages anticipated to be freed. The hostages had been captured on October 7, and the release occurred amid a temporary halt in fighting. The deal, however, was not fully honored by Hamas, as they broke the ceasefire on the same day with a rocket launched just 20 minutes after the agreement. Additionally, the deal was supposed to release families together, but Hamas released individuals, leaving many still missing their relatives.

The hostages’ return involved various individuals, including elderly citizens like Ditza Heiman (84) and Tamar Metzger (78), as well as younger individuals like 17-year-old dual citizen Mia Leimberg, who is also Argentinian. The fate of some hostages, including the Bibas family with a 10-month-old in captivity, remains uncertain. The family was handed over from Hamas to another Palestinian terror group in Gaza. The hostage release followed previous groups, and the situation involves complex negotiations, including a broader truce deal between Israel and Hamas.
