Defense Minister Yoav Gallant rejected French President Emmanuel Macron’s proposal for a trilateral task force involving France, the United States, and Israel aimed at defusing tensions with Hezbollah along Israel’s northern border. Gallant criticized France’s policies toward Israel, accusing it of adopting a “hostile stance” and ignoring atrocities committed by Hamas. This rejection comes amid heightened conflict, with Hezbollah continuing attacks on northern Israeli towns, causing damage but no casualties in Israel this past week. Gallant’s remarks have sparked a rare public disagreement between Israel’s Defense Ministry and Foreign Ministry, the latter condemning Gallant’s comments and emphasizing France’s supportive role in various international efforts to sanction Hamas and Iran. French diplomats say they “disapprove” of Israel’s “attacks” on France.
There isn’t much of a clear explanation as to why the Defense Minister took this approach, however it could be that he resents a decision made by French authorities last month to ban Israeli defense firms from participating in one of the world’s largest defense fairs. This move occurred amid increasing calls to restrict arms sales to the IDF and divest from Israeli defense companies due to the ongoing war in Gaza.
The tensions between Israel and Hezbollah have been escalating, with Hezbollah launching frequent attacks on northern Israeli communities and the IDF responding.
These attacks have resulted in property damage but no casualties in Israel. Just days ago some 14 people were injured in Lebanon. In retaliation, the IDF has targeted Hezbollah positions in the country. The ongoing conflict, which began intensifying after a deadly Hamas attack in October, has led to significant casualties on both sides, including the deaths of Israeli civilians and soldiers, as well as numerous Hezbollah operatives. International efforts, including the upcoming visit of a senior adviser to US President Biden, aim to prevent further escalation and avoid an all-out war.
Gallant says “As we fight a just war, defending our people, France has adopted hostile policies against Israel. In doing so, France ignores the atrocities committed by Hamas against Israeli children, women and men. Israel will not be a party to the trilateral framework proposed by France.”
Rockets continue to fly into or over Israeli territory and many have caused fires throughout the north of Israel.
Lebanon has a history with France, and was occupied by British and “Free French” troops in 1941.
